I also build in visibility into the signals that actually predict trouble before they turn into an outage or a security event: resource utilization trending toward a limit, error rates ticking up, unusual account activity. Monitoring that only gets set up after an incident is monitoring for the last problem, not the next one.

Effective alerting is about accuracy, not volume. Thresholds that are too broad create alert fatigue, while thresholds that are too narrow miss critical issues. I complement monitoring with audit logging, cost anomaly detection, and activity tracking that improves security investigations and shortens troubleshooting when problems do occur.
